Latest Interview with Vents Magazine

Hi Fifi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks I’ve been busy..

Can you tell us more about the story behind your track ¨Once¨? Did any event in particular inspire the song?

It’s about revisiting an ex boyfriend very far away after a brief relationship we had many years ago.  Time has changed both of us, and given us certain reservations. But I missed how unassuming we were, how pure and open our emotions were for each other and the passion that could only exist once, occurred in a particular space and time..never again.

The single comes off your new album Violently Silently – what´s the story behind the title?

The meaning of the title ‘Violently Silently’ is threefold:

1. The phrase taken from the chorus in ‘Since When’ describing the emotion from suffering a downturn of a relationship.

2. The phrase describing my sound being subtle, vulnerable, introverted (silently) yet emotionally powerful, extreme and brutal (violent)

3. It’s my wish to approach the music world in a low key (silently) matter with serious intention to impact (violently).

How was the recording and writing process?

It was long. Prob the most detailed work I have done. Writing is always the easy part, recording is not hard, but production wise, editing the vocals takes much longer. And production of the music takes much, much longer. But tuning sounds and experimenting sounds and ideas is my thing, so I enjoy the hard work.

In what way has Beijing influence your music?

Mainly in my voice, the way I use my voice has Beijing opera and chinese traditional elements. Phrasing and natural feel of the culture. Musically it has given me a different perspective and approach to perceive western music, so whatever I do that is natural to me, would be different and almost ‘strange’ to the western ears that’s only exposed to western music.

Does your musical approach changes depending if you are working with another artist than when you are working on an original material?

Hmm the core is always me, but having said that I’m very adaptable, I like to have someone else to bring out the potential I didn’t know I had. So collab is always a great experience for me, and hopefully for them.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes.. Haven’t confirmed anything but hopefully in the near future.

What else is happening next in Fifi Rong´s world?

I’m recording and producing my album. That takes over my world. All of me.
